Contacts and customers

Important

Draft documentation
This content is a draft version of the SkyBill documentation and is subject to final review. Some information may be incomplete or inaccurate. Features, terminology, and procedures may change before the official release.

In SkyBill, both contacts and customers are created and managed in a manner similar to that in standard Dynamics 365 Business Central.

To learn more, see Create contacts and Register new customers.

There are, however, some differences in how utility companies typically use customer and contact functionalities.

  • Contacts are typically created automatically together with customers. To learn more, see To automatically create contacts when you create customers.
  • Customers are typically created in bulk by using data upload tools available in SkyBill. Manual customer creation is less common.
  • Credit memo functionality available on the customer card is typically not used in the utility billing context.

To automatically create contacts when creating customers

Configure SkyBill to automatically create a contact every time you create a customer. This way, you don't need to run a separate job to manually create contacts.

  1. Select Search (Alt+Q) Lightbulb that opens the Tell Me feature. in the upper-right corner, enter Marketing Setup, and then choose the related link.
  2. On the Marketing Setup page, on the Interactions FastTab, specify the appropriate code in the Customers field. Depending on your number series setup, this can be a code such as CUST or CUSTOMER.
  3. On the Numbering FastTab, specify the number series code in the Contact Nos. field. Depending on your number series setup, this can be a code such as CONT or CONTACT.

With this setup in place, every time you create a new customer, SkyBill automatically generates a corresponding contact using the specified number series.
